Every Day We're Making Room for Your Talent

Every Day, We’re Making Room
for Your Talent

Did you hear the news?  John Kennedy is dead. So is Mother Theresa, Tim Conway, Robin Williams, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Dave Brubeck, and a whole lot more of once-greats.

That just means that now, more than ever, there is room for your talent.  Openings become available with every death and departure from this earth.

Of course, you can look at your field through these eyes, or you could, I suppose, look at it and say, “I’ll never make it.”

I happen to believe there is always room for you and your skill if you’re willing to keep at it, improve, study, practice, take classes and lessons, seek out mentors better than yourself.

The big questions is – will you?  Will you keep working on your craft?  Will you set lofty goals and dreams so that when opportunity knocks you’ll be ready to step through the door?

I hope so.

Growth Boils Down to Choices

Growth Boils Down to Choices

Every person, EVERY PERSON who has accomplished the impossible has made a decision to do or not, go or not, learn or not, grow or not.

Each person chose the time of day to arise from sleep, the foods to eat, the time for study and to what resources they went, what part of their dream to work on each day, to whom to go for help when needed.

They made choices!

Great musicians make choices as to when to practice, what to practice, how to practice.

I am a writer.  Today my goal is to write three blogs.  This is my first one because I consider it an easier one to write.  It is like a warm-up act for me.  The other two will take a bit more work and thought.  I’m getting my brain in gear for the next two.  That is a choice.  Athletes warm up before the race.

Do you understand the value of the warm-up?  That is a choice.

Sometimes We Play Left-Handed

Sometimes We Play Left-Handed

Paul McCartney of the Beatles fame was a left-
handed bass player when the rest of the world played the electric bass as a right-handed player.  He did opposite from the rest of the world.  And his career turned out pretty good.

Music teachers are trained to teach us proper technique, proper stance.  However, sometimes a student needs to adapt, adjust to their own proclivities.

I should have tried, at least a few times, setting my drums up to accommodate my left-handedness.  It was unheard of in those days, so I didn’t.

See my point.  It matters not whether you are a bass player, a carpenter, a painter, a writer, a builder of homes.  You adapt your teaching to what works best for you.

Learn the basics, by all means, and then adapt.

Adapt
               Adapt
                              Adapt
